Icygeek Reviews: KFC’s Nashville Hot Chicken

While this site primarily focuses on geek things, there is nothing we can’t look at if we get the inkling to.  So today we review KFC’s new Nashville Hot Chicken.  How is it?  Well…

To get a single Nashville Hot Chicken (NHC) meal, it is $5.49.  You get either 3 tenders, a Thigh & Drumstick, or a single breast.  It comes with cole slaw and a biscuit.  In comparison, you can get the same chicken piece in Original, Crispy, or Kevlar/Grilled in a $5 fill-up, and get a chocolate chip cookie and drink as well.  So, you are paying more to get less.  That’s the biggest problem with the chicken.

As for the chicken itself?  It is down right tasty, even better than the Double Down or the Kevlar they call grilled chicken.  The chicken leg was the best leg we’ve had in a long time.  The thigh wasn’t as exceptional; compared to a normal crispy thigh it has its strengths and minuses that cancelled it out.  You won’t be disappointed either way.

As for heat?  The spicy chicken from Popeye’s was hotter, but NHC was tastier.  The sit-down table service chain O’Charley’s (where we often eat 2-3 times a week) has had their Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich for two weeks, and they have been giving smack talk to KFC about their.  O’Charley’s sauce for their hot chicken is hotter than KFC NHC and Popeye’s, but not as tasty.  It is also not as appealing to the eye as the two fried chicken franchises.

We called the KFC which has a buffet to see if the NHC would be on the buffet and they said it wasn’t, so we instead went to our local KFC (less than two miles from the KFC Yum! Center, in the same Hoosier county that Colonel Sanders himself was born) that didn’t have the buffet.  That’s a shame.  Also the staff at our KFC had a hard time remembering that the NHC is supposed to have (small dill sliced) pickles with it.

If you have always wanted to try some NHC, you shouldn’t be disappointed in what KFC has to offer.  We haven’t yet managed to try some authentic non-chain NHC yet, so we can’t really compare to that.  After all is said and done, we give KFC’s Nashville Hot Chicken 4 out of 5 snowflakes.

Quoth the penguin…evermore.
